At a glance

What changed
On Monday 7 September 2026, Translink changed bus routes 70, 700, 701, 754, 760, 764, 765 and 777 to work with the light rail extension to Burleigh Heads
Route 700
Now runs between Tweed Heads and Stockland Burleigh Heads only, every 10 minutes on a set timetable
Route 777
Limited-stop express between Gold Coast Airport and Stockland Burleigh Heads only
New route 701
The Pines, Elanora and Robina station via Varsity Lakes station. Every 15 minutes from 7am to 7pm, and every 30 minutes at other times, seven days a week
Overnight
Route 70 replaces the tram between Burleigh Heads and Helensvale every 30 minutes from midnight to 4am, Monday to Thursday
Tram
Every 7.5 minutes at peak and every 10 to 30 minutes off-peak between Broadbeach South and Burleigh Heads

Since Monday 7 September 2026, the route 700 bus no longer goes north to Broadbeach South and the route 777 airport bus ends at Stockland Burleigh Heads, so for the rest of the trip you change to the G:link tram at Burleigh Heads. Translink also started a new route 701 and renamed the late night 700 as route 70.

Translink says services that duplicate the tram line were shortened or combined, which may mean you need to transfer between services to finish a journey. The details below come from Translink’s service notice, last reviewed on Tuesday 8 September 2026, and a Queensland Government media statement of 17 August 2026, checked on Friday 23 October 2026.

What changed on each route?

Route What changed
70 The former late night route 700 is now the overnight tram replacement service between Burleigh Heads and Helensvale stations
700 Runs between Tweed Heads and Stockland Burleigh Heads only, and no longer goes north to Broadbeach South
701 (new) Runs between The Pines, Elanora and Robina station via Varsity Lakes station
754 Extended further south to cover part of the old route 764 alignment up to The Pines, so it runs between Broadbeach South and The Pines
764 Now a short local loop between The Pines and Currumbin Park
765 Runs between Christine Avenue and Robina stations only
777 Limited-stop express between Gold Coast Airport and Stockland Burleigh Heads only
760 Adjusted timetable that reflects quicker travel times after roadworks finished

The Queensland Government statement says the revamped network adds 167 weekday trips, a 25 per cent increase in weekday services, and 112 weekend trips, a 19 per cent increase in weekend services, across the southern Gold Coast.

How do I get from Tweed Heads to Broadbeach now?

Translink says route 700 now runs between Tweed Heads and Stockland Burleigh Heads only, because the tram extension provides the connection north to Broadbeach South. If you are travelling beyond Stockland Burleigh Heads, you need to transfer between bus and tram. Translink expects the transfers to be convenient, with both services running frequently. Route 700 still runs every 10 minutes, but it now follows a set timetable instead of arriving at approximate intervals.

Because a transfer within 1 hour counts as one journey, a bus-and-tram trip is still one 50 cent fare when you tap on and off with the same card. Our guide to Translink transfer rules explains the limits.

How do I get from the airport to the tram?

Route 777 now runs as a limited-stop express service between Gold Coast Airport and Stockland Burleigh Heads. It no longer travels further north towards Broadbeach South station. Our airport to Surfers Paradise guide has sample times and the tram connection at Burleigh Heads station.

What is the new route 701?

Route 701 is a new bus service that travels between The Pines, Elanora and Robina station via Varsity Lakes station. According to Translink, buses run every 15 minutes between 7am and 7pm and every 30 minutes outside those times, seven days a week. The Queensland Government statement also lists Burleigh Heads, Robina Town Centre and Varsity Lakes station as connections. Translink says there are new stops at Reedy Creek Road at Bermuda Street, outside the Treetops Shopping Centre, and at Station Parade at Varsity Lakes station.

What runs overnight?

Route 70, formerly the late night route 700, is the new overnight tram replacement service. It runs between Burleigh Heads and Helensvale stations every 30 minutes between midnight and 4am, Monday to Thursday. The pages we read do not say what replaces the tram on other nights. For taxi ranks and fares on Friday and Saturday nights, see our guide to late night transport in Surfers Paradise.

What changed at stops?

  • West Burleigh Road: two new stops are being added to improve local access. One is south of Dunlin Drive and will become the starting point for services towards Tweed Heads via Burleigh Heads. Until it is complete, buses use the existing stop at West Burleigh Road at Dunlin Drive. The other is between Stephens Street and Starling Street, paired with the existing stop near Stanley Street.
  • Christine Avenue: route 765 no longer stops at Christine Avenue at Hibiscus Haven, Miami. If you used that stop, cross the road and catch the bus at Christine Avenue station, Miami.
  • Varsity Lakes: there is a new stop at Station Parade at Varsity Lakes station for route 701.

The West Burleigh Road stop at Stanley Street is also closed from 14 October to 13 November for roadworks, so check our bus stop closures guide if you use it.
