Translink Transfer Rules on the Gold Coast: How One 50 Cent Fare Covers Your Bus, Tram and Train Trips (QLD)

At a glance

Fare
50 cents for the whole journey, as of October 2026, if your trips count as one journey
Go card, contactless card or phone
Make your next transfer within 1 hour, up to 3 transfers per journey
Limits
The total journey must be shorter than 6 hours, and the final trip must start within 3.5 hours of your first tap on
Paper ticket
Unlimited transfers within 2 hours, or 3.5 hours if you travel more than 4 zones
Always
Tap on and tap off with the same card or device
If you forget
A default fare of $2.50 can be charged, and you have 120 days to ask for an adjustment

If you tap on and off with the same go card, contactless card or phone, a bus-to-tram or tram-to-train trip on the Gold Coast is still one journey and one 50 cent fare, as long as each transfer is within 1 hour and you make no more than 3 transfers. The rules below are from Translink’s transfer pages and are accurate as of October 2026.

Translink’s transferring between services page says the transfer options let you combine two or more smaller trips into one overall journey with one fare. We checked it on Wednesday 21 October 2026. For the basic fare and how to pay, see our G:link fares guide.

What are the transfer rules for a go card, contactless card or phone?

Use the same go card, contactless card or device for every tap on and tap off, and your trips are combined into a single fare. Translink lists these rules:

  • tap on and tap off with the same card or device
  • make your next transfer within 1 hour
  • make up to 3 transfers per journey
  • keep the total journey shorter than 6 hours
  • start the final trip within 3.5 hours of when you first tapped on

If you use a physical card, take it out of your wallet to avoid card clash. Translink’s contactless payments guide says a virtual card on your phone and the physical card count as different payment methods, so do not switch between them part way through a journey.

What counts as one journey?

Translink’s journey and trip page says a trip is travelling from point A to point B with no transfers. A journey can be one trip or several trips combined, and it is still one journey if you touch on within 60 minutes of touching off on your previous trip.

Situation One journey?
Bus to tram, tapping on the tram 20 minutes after tapping off the bus, using the same card Yes, because the transfer is within 1 hour
Bus to tram, tapping on the tram 90 minutes after tapping off No. That is a new journey and a new fare
Bus, tram, train and a second bus, with all three transfers inside 1 hour each Yes, as long as the journey stays under 6 hours and the final trip starts within 3.5 hours of the first tap on
A fifth leg after three transfers No. Translink allows up to 3 transfers per journey
Phone for the first leg and a physical card for the second No. You must use the same card or device

The examples are our reading of Translink’s rules. Check the transfers page if your trip is close to a limit.

What are the rules for paper tickets?

For a paper ticket, Translink says you get unlimited transfers within 2 hours, or 3.5 hours if you travel more than 4 zones in South East Queensland. You must start your final trip before the printed expiry time. Returning to your initial departure destination is not permitted on the same ticket, so you must buy another paper ticket to do that.

Kilcoy and the Sunshine Coast Hinterland are not part of the South East Queensland fare network, and you need separate tickets there.

What if I forget to tap on or off?

Translink may charge a default fare if you do not tap on at the start of a trip or tap off at the end. As at 27 April 2026, the default fare is $2.50 for a bus, tram, ferry or train, for adults, children, seniors and concession customers. Airtrain has its own default fare of $25.80 for adults, seniors and concession customers, and $2.50 for children.

Translink says that during major events, when it may not be possible to tap on or off, it reduces the default fare amount so you do not have to ask for an adjustment. If you think you were charged in error, you can request a fare adjustment within 120 days of the charge. For a go card, you can do this online or by calling 13 12 30. For a contactless credit or debit card, use the Translink Ticketing Assistant or call 13 12 30.

Where do transfers happen on the Gold Coast?

Many transfers happen at a few stations. At Helensvale you can change between the Gold Coast train line and the G:link, and at Broadbeach South and Burleigh Heads many bus routes meet the tram. Our G:link station guide lists the bus routes at the main stations, and our airport to Surfers Paradise guide shows a transfer from the route 777 bus to the tram at Burleigh Heads.

Airtrain is a separate operator and has its own fares, so a transfer onto or off Airtrain does not follow these rules. Translink’s journey and trip page also says discounted fares do not apply to an Airtrain journey.

Who can I ask?

Translink’s contact centre is on 13 12 30, and its pages on default fares and transfers give the current rules. Rules can change, and Translink’s 50 cent fares page describes the flat fare as applying “during this time”, so check the official pages before you plan a long trip.
