Transport Park&Ride gives up to 18 hours of free parking each day in dedicated car parks when you complete a public transport trip, according to Transport for NSW. To qualify you tap on and tap off with the same accepted card, and you exit the car park within 18 hours of entering. If you link your number plate and card in a Transport Connect account, you do not need to tap out when you leave the car park.

This guide sets out how the system works, how to register, what is limited, and how to ask for a refund if you are charged, using the Transport for NSW pages on Park&Ride car parks and using Park&Ride with a Transport Connect account, read on Friday 23 October 2026. To find a car park, use the Park&Ride search on the Transport for NSW page, by suburb or station.

How do I get free Park&Ride parking?

Transport for NSW says Park&Ride is designed to free up more spaces at commuter car parks for people who travel on public transport. The car parks are close to transport hubs, to connect you to metro, train, bus and ferry services. To qualify for free parking, you must:

  • Park your vehicle in a dedicated Park&Ride car park.
  • Complete a trip on public transport by tapping on and tapping off with the same accepted card.
  • Exit the car park within 18 hours of entering.

If you do not meet the conditions, you are charged a fee when you exit the car park.

Opal card or credit and debit card?

With an accepted Opal card, you complete a trip on public transport and then tap out as you exit the car park. With a credit or debit card, you first need to complete a trip on public transport with the physical card to validate it if it is your first time using it to travel. Once validated, you can register for a Transport Connect account at transportnsw.info/account. Our guide to Opal fares and how to pay covers tapping on and off.

How do I link my car to Transport Connect?

  1. Complete a trip with your credit or debit card to validate it, if you are using one for the first time.
  2. Register for a Transport Connect account and select Park&Ride under My services.
  3. Follow the prompts to register your card and your vehicle’s number plate. You can also link your Opal card at this step.
  4. Enter the car park and park.

You need the vehicle’s number plate, the card you will use to tap on and off (credit, debit or Opal), and a payment card that will be charged if you incur any parking fees. After set-up, there is no need to tap out when you leave, and all your parking history is available online. If you already have a Transport Connect account with the card linked, log in, select Park&Ride from My services, and add the number plate.

Which cards and devices can I link?

You can link a maximum of 10 tap-on methods to one Transport Connect account, including debit or credit cards and Opal cards. Phones, watches and tablets linked to a credit or debit card do not count as separate methods. Transport for NSW says you can use such a device as long as it is the same one linked to Park&Ride in your account.

  • Opal cards that can be linked: Adult, Child/Youth, Gold Senior/Pensioner, Concession, Employee and free travel Opal cards.
  • Not accepted: Opal single trip tickets and School Opal cards cannot be linked to Park&Ride in Transport Connect.

What about shared cars, several vehicles and hire cars?

A maximum of four vehicles can be linked to one Transport Connect account. The first account a vehicle is linked to is the primary account, and the vehicle can have up to three secondary accounts in addition. If two people share a car, each needs their own Transport Connect account with the number plate linked, along with the cards they use to travel, so the system can match each public transport trip to the car when exiting. The primary account holder receives a notification, with the first name of the person adding the vehicle. If you believe someone linked your vehicle by mistake, submit a help request through the Help tab in Transport Connect.

For a hire car or courtesy car, you can link the number plate before you park, provided it is not already linked to the maximum number of accounts. Transport for NSW says to remove the plate from your account once you have returned the vehicle.

What if I do not qualify, or I am charged?

If you do not qualify for free parking, you can pay with a credit or debit card at the Park&Ride exit gate. You cannot pay with cash or an Opal card. If you use Transport Connect, any fees are charged to the nominated card in your account.

How do I check charges and ask for a refund?

  • Check: if you have a linked Transport Connect account, the Activity tab shows your car parking history, transactions and charges. For privacy, the location of the car park is not included in the listing.
  • Linked cards: select the transaction in the Activity list, add the details required, and your refund request goes for review.
  • Opal card not linked to Transport Connect: complete the refund form or phone the operator on 1300 117 901.
  • Timing: in rare cases, Opal travel activity may take up to 48 hours to register on the Park&Ride system, so allow at least 48 hours after you exit before requesting a refund. Allow about 20 business days for processing.
  • Card fees: card issuer fees are not refunded; contact your financial institution.
  • If a refund for a charge paid at the exit gate is approved, you complete an additional form with the car park operator.

Does Park&Ride come with event tickets?

For some major events, Transport for NSW says tickets include free Park&Ride parking. The event pages for the Royal Randwick race day and the BIGBANG concert at Accor Stadium both say to use the intercom button at the exit gate and show your event ticket when leaving.

The Royal Randwick page adds a note for Transport Connect users: if you use a Transport Connect account to access Park&Ride, the boom gate opens automatically as you leave, so you must request a refund in your account. The BIGBANG page does not say this. Entitlements vary by event, so check each event page.
