Foundation Day is free and runs from 9am to 2pm on Saturday 31 October 2026 at Hambledon Cottage Reserve, 63 Hassall Street, Parramatta. The City of Parramatta recommends taking the Parramatta Light Rail to the Robin Thomas or Tramway Avenue stop and walking the short distance, because parking in the streets around the reserve is limited.

This guide is based on the City of Parramatta’s Foundation Day page and its What’s On listing, both checked on Monday 26 October 2026. The city says details may be added closer to the day, so look at the page again on Saturday morning.

The city’s What’s On listing says historical experts and family-friendly activities will be at Hambledon Cottage Reserve on the day, and that all ages are welcome.

What time is Foundation Day, and is it free?

The day runs from 9am to 2pm on Saturday 31 October. The City of Parramatta says it is free to attend, and that there will be free drop-in activities, exhibitions, workshops and live performances during the day. The city does not say whether items at the market and food stalls are free, so bring a little money in case.

What is on at Foundation Day 2026?

The City of Parramatta lists these activities for the day. The city describes face painting, craft workshops, the photo booth, the petting zoo and the talks as free.

Activity What the city says
Open House Go inside Hambledon Cottage, and follow a self-guided info flag trail through the grounds
Historical Talks Free talks led by historical and archival experts about Parramatta’s past
Petting Zoo Meet, pet and feed farm animals
Kids’ Craft Workshops Free nature play activities
Face Painting Free face painting for children
Cart Photo Booth A free photo booth set up in a cart
Roving Entertainers Performers including British “red jacket” soldiers and bubble artists, moving around the grounds
Live Music The Valley Voices Choir, with more performers still to be announced
Market and Food Stalls Community and heritage stalls, from local history displays to handcrafted ceramic goods

The city also invites visitors to come dressed in vintage or heritage-inspired outfits. The market is described as a nod to the first recorded fair in Australia, which the city says was held in Parramatta in October 1822. This guide has not checked that claim beyond the city’s own page.

How do I get to Hambledon Cottage Reserve?

The City of Parramatta’s advice is to take the Parramatta Light Rail to the Robin Thomas or Tramway Avenue stops and walk the short distance to the reserve. The city does not give a walking time, so allow a few extra minutes on your first visit. The tram stops are on the Parramatta Light Rail line, which the photos below show.

Use the Transport for NSW trip planner for tram times on 31 October, and check for service changes before you leave. This guide has not checked trackwork for that day.

Where can I park near Foundation Day?

The City of Parramatta says carpooling is recommended and that there is limited parking on Alfred Street, Oak Street and Alice Street. It does not name an event car park, so there is no confirmed free car park and no confirmed time limit. If you drive, read the signs on the street you choose and arrive early, because the city describes parking on those streets as limited.

The simplest plan is to take the light rail and walk, which is what the city suggests first. If you are travelling with young children or a pram, give yourself extra time for the walk from the stop to the reserve.

What if it rains, and what facilities will there be?

The City of Parramatta’s Foundation Day page has question-and-answer entries on rain, first aid, public toilets, drinking water, wheelchair access and bringing a dog, but the answers did not load when this guide was checked. This guide therefore does not state any of those answers. The What’s On listing marks the event as wheelchair and low-mobility accessible.

Question Answer from the city
Wheelchair and low-mobility access Marked accessible on the What’s On listing
Wet-weather plan Not confirmed here; check the Foundation Day page
First aid Not confirmed here
Public toilets Not confirmed here
Free drinking water Not confirmed here
Dogs Not confirmed here

Because the event is outdoors in a reserve, bring a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle if the day is sunny, and a light jacket if the forecast looks uncertain. These are general suggestions, not information from the organiser.

What should I wear, and how long should I stay?

The city invites visitors to come dressed in their best vintage or heritage-inspired outfit. Nothing on the city’s page says that costumes are required for entry. The program runs for five hours, from 9am to 2pm, and because most activities are drop-in you can arrive at any time. Talks, workshops and the open house are first come, first served, so if one of them is your main reason for going, arriving earlier in the day is the safer choice.

Families with young children may want to start with the petting zoo, the craft workshops and the face painting, which the city lists as free. Visitors who are more interested in history can combine the open house at Hambledon Cottage with the self-guided info flag trail through the grounds, and plan around the historical talks once the city publishes the times. The city has not published a timetable for the talks or for the Valley Voices Choir, so treat any time you hear elsewhere as unconfirmed until it appears on the city’s page.
