Transperth’s standard fare for a trip across the Perth network is Go Anywhere, which costs $3.50 in cash or by contactless payment, $3.15 with a SmartRider and $2.80 with a SmartRider on Autoload, for up to three hours of travel on any bus, train or ferry. A trip of 3.2 km or less on a single service uses the cheaper 2 Sections fare of $2.40. These fares took effect on 1 January 2026.

This guide explains how the fares work, with the worked examples Transperth publishes, what the SmartRider card and Autoload cost and save, and the day tickets for groups. Everything comes from Transperth’s own pages, checked on Thursday 22 October 2026.

What are the fares in 2026?

The Transperth fares page lists these standard fares, all GST inclusive:

Fare Cash or contactless SmartRider, 10% discount SmartRider, 20% discount
2 Sections $2.40 $2.16 $1.92
Go Anywhere $3.50 $3.15 $2.80
DayRider $7.00
FamilyRider (cash only) $7.00

Concession fares are lower, and apply to cash and SmartRider but not to contactless payments:

Concession fare Cash SmartRider, 10% discount SmartRider, 20% discount
2 Sections $1.10 $0.99 $0.88
Go Anywhere $1.60 $1.44 $1.28
DayRider $3.20

Transperth says a standard cash rate applies to contactless payments, and that concession fares are not available on them. If you are eligible for a concession, you need to use your SmartRider.

What is the difference between 2 Sections and Go Anywhere?

Transperth’s system lets you use any combination of bus, train and ferry anywhere on the network for one flat fare until the time limit expires.

  • 2 Sections is Transperth’s name for a trip of 3.2 kilometres or less. It gives you a one-way ride on a single bus, train or ferry service. If you continue your journey you need another ticket; with a SmartRider or contactless payment, the system calculates the appropriate fare automatically.
  • Go Anywhere lets you travel anywhere on the Transperth network within three hours. With a SmartRider or contactless payments, your fare is capped at the Go Anywhere fare. With a cash ticket you select the Go Anywhere option and get three hours of travel from the time of purchase.

How do the fares work in practice?

Transperth’s fare examples page works through four journeys.

A short one-way train trip

Travelling by train from Joondalup to Edgewater is a short distance, so 2 Sections applies. With a SmartRider or contactless payment you tag on and off and the system deducts the 2 Sections fare. With a cash ticket you keep the ticket with you, and it expires when you leave the train at Edgewater.

A longer one-way trip

Travelling from Joondalup to Perth Underground, you tag on at 10.00am or buy a Go Anywhere cash ticket. The ticket allows three hours of travel, so in the example it expires at 1.00pm. Transperth’s example takes the 10.09am train, which arrives at Perth Underground at 10.35am, and your fare is capped at the Go Anywhere cost.

A journey with a break

Suppose you leave Perth Underground for coffee, then take a second train to Bull Creek. If you tag on at Perth Underground before 1.00pm, the system deducts no extra fare when you tag off at Bull Creek, because you are within the three-hour limit. If you tag on after 1.00pm, it deducts another fare, capped at the DayRider rate. With a cash ticket, boarding before 1.00pm means the same ticket is still valid, and after 1.00pm you need another ticket.

Changing buses

Transperth’s fourth example is a bus trip from Joondalup to Perth that changes buses twice and arrives about 11.45am. It takes longer than the train but costs the same, because the Go Anywhere fare entitles you to travel anywhere on the network within three hours. With a SmartRider or contactless payment you tag on and off each bus, and you pay the Go Anywhere fare for the whole journey provided your last tag-on is within three hours of your first. With a cash ticket you tell the driver of the first bus that you are going to Perth, and the ticket lets you board each bus before the expiry time.

What does a SmartRider cost and save?

Transperth describes the SmartRider as a reusable, non-refundable card and as the cheapest and most convenient way to travel, giving you a 10% discount off the cash fare. Its Standard SmartRider page gives the purchase cost as $10.00 and the initial minimum value as $10.00. Transperth’s visiting Perth page describes the same card as costing $20 and giving you $10 of travel.

  • You can buy one at a Transperth InfoCentre, from a retail sales outlet, or from a SmartRider Hub in some stations.
  • At Perth Airport, Perth Airport says SmartRider cards can be bought at Smarte Carte on the ground floor of Terminal 1 International.
  • Transperth lists other card types for concession holders, seniors, pensioners, veterans, students and tertiary students.

How does Autoload give a 20% discount?

With Autoload, an amount is debited from your bank account or credit card to your SmartRider automatically when the balance falls below $6 for standard users or $3 for concession users. Once Autoload is active you receive the 20% discount.

  • The amount you nominate can be no less than $20 and no more than $250. Transperth recommends an amount that covers at least 10 days of travel.
  • If Autoload is active and you add value another way, the 20% discount is removed and you receive the 10% discount until the next Autoload top-up.
  • To start, log in to My Account on the website or app, add your SmartRider, select Manage Autoload, and wait 24 hours. Then tag on and off within five days to activate it.

When are DayRider and FamilyRider worth considering?

DayRider gives unlimited travel on the day you buy it, and is available all day, every day. SmartRider and contactless users are automatically capped at the DayRider rate, so you do not need to buy one in advance. FamilyRider is a cash ticket for up to seven people, as long as no more than two of them normally pay full fare. You can buy one at these times:

  • Weekends and public holidays: any time.
  • Monday to Thursday outside school holidays: after 6.00pm.
  • Fridays outside school holidays: after 3.00pm.
  • Monday to Friday during school holidays: after 8.30am.

Transperth uses the Western Australian Department of Education school holiday dates.

How do I pay, and where must I pay first?

  • Transperth says train and ferry fares must be bought before you travel, while bus fares can be paid as you board.
  • Bus drivers are not handling cash on board, so no change is given. If you pay cash on a bus, pay the exact amount.
  • Cash tickets are sold at ticket machines at train stations and ferry jetties.
  • Contactless payments are accepted with Visa and Mastercard, including digital wallets. Tag on and off with the same card or device.

Where is travel free?

Transperth lists several free options. Every Sunday travel is free for SmartRider holders and contactless users on all bus, train and ferry trips, except late-night services after midnight on Saturday. The Free Transit Zone in the city covers buses, and trains between City West, Elizabeth Quay and Claisebrook stations for SmartRider and contactless users who start and finish inside the zone. The Blue, Green, Purple, Red and Yellow CAT buses are free. The Surf CAT between Stirling Station and Scarborough beach runs every 10 minutes, every day of the year.

Transperth’s visiting Perth page says the ferry between Elizabeth Quay and South Perth takes around 10 minutes and needs a cash ticket, a SmartRider or contactless payment.

How do I check a fare for my own trip?

  1. Use the Transperth JourneyPlanner or app, which Transperth says shows how much you need to pay and which service to take.
  2. Pay with a SmartRider if you travel often, and consider Autoload for the 20% discount.
  3. For help, call the Transperth InfoLine on 13 62 13.
