Both of the City of Gold Coast’s small car parks at the southern end of the coast are free: the Chalk & Lanham Street car park in Coolangatta and the Bielby Street car park in Tugun Village. Bielby Street has no time limits and is open 24/7, while Chalk & Lanham Street mixes time-restricted and unrestricted bays, so you need to read the signs.

Details below are from the City’s car park pages, checked on 15 October 2026.

Do the time limits at Chalk & Lanham Street apply on weekends?

Yes. The City lists the same hours, 8am to 5pm, for every day from Sunday to Saturday, and says time restrictions apply on all public holidays in this area. Outside those hours, parking is unrestricted.

The page does not say how long you can stay in a restricted bay or which bays are restricted. It asks drivers to check signs when parking, so read the sign at your bay before you walk away. If you plan a long day at the beach, look for a bay without a time limit.

What is near each car park?

The City’s pages for the two car parks describe the car parks themselves rather than the streets around them. These nearby places are from other City pages.

  • Coolangatta Library: the library is in The Strand Shopping Centre, opposite the Coolangatta Surf Club, with entry on the corner of Marine Parade and Dutton Street. The City says The Strand offers free parking for up to three hours on weekdays and two hours on weekends, and that there is street parking nearby. The library is open Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 5pm and closed on Saturday, Sunday and Gold Coast public holidays. Its phone number is 07 5667 5940.
  • Tugun Village Community Centre: the centre is at 414 Coolangatta Road, Tugun. Rooms can be hired seven days a week between 7am and 11pm. The City’s page does not name a car park for the centre, so check the signs around it. The centre has a large hall with a stage and a smaller activity room, and it is the home of the Tugun Theatre Company, which puts on up to four shows a year.

Coolangatta Library also lists free Wi-Fi, PCs with Microsoft Office, photocopying, printing and scanning to USB, self-serve checkout points, accessible parking, a defibrillator and a community notice board, which makes it a useful stop if your parking time is limited.

Is there anything to know about the Queensland and New South Wales border?

Coolangatta sits on the border with Tweed Heads in New South Wales. Queensland does not use daylight saving, but New South Wales does, so while daylight saving applies the Tweed Heads side is one hour ahead of Coolangatta. The City’s time limits run on Queensland time. If you cross the border and park on the New South Wales side, a different set of rules applies there, and this article does not cover it.

Did buses use Lanham Street during the October roadworks?

Translink used two temporary stops on Lanham Street for routes 700, 760 and 768 on the nights of Monday 12 to Thursday 15 October, from 6pm to 6am, while stops in Coolangatta were closed for roadworks. That notice covered those four nights only. For other bus questions, call Translink’s contact centre on 13 12 30, and read the Translink notice if you travelled on those routes.
