If you have a Brisbane City Council parking fine, you have 28 days from the issue date to pay it, and you can pay online, by BPAY, by phone, by post, in person or through a payment plan. If you do nothing, Council sends a reminder notice that gives you another 28 days but adds a fee. These are the rules on Brisbane City Council’s parking fines page as of 7 November 2026.

Who can issue a parking fine in Brisbane?

Council says that only Council and the Queensland Police Service can issue a parking fine in Brisbane. The page covers Council-issued fines. The dispute section is explicit that it applies to a “Council-issued parking fine”, so check which body is named on your notice before you follow these steps.

Council regulates parking under Queensland Government and local legislation. If you are in doubt about an infringement notice, the page tells you to check the common parking offences and fines list, which is summarised further down.

How long do I have to pay?

You have 28 days from the issue date. If you take no action, Council sends a reminder notice that gives you another 28 days, and that second period carries a fee. Council’s page does not state the fee amount, so we have not given one. The amount will be on the reminder notice itself.

Parking fines must be paid in full by the due date. The one exception Council describes is a payment plan arranged before that date, covered below.

How can I pay a Brisbane parking fine?

Method What Council says
Online The quickest way. Visa or Mastercard credit or debit cards only. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
BPAY By phone or internet banking. The biller code and reference number are on the front of the notice. BPAY is available only on select notices, so look for the BPAY logo
Phone 1300 012 747, with a Visa or Mastercard. Have the fine on hand for the reference number
Post Mail the fine with a cheque or money order to Brisbane City Council, GPO Box 589, Brisbane Qld 4001
In person At any Council Customer Centre or any Australia Post office, with your fine

One timing detail matters if you want to pay straight away. Council says it can take up to 2 hours from the time of issue for a fine to be available for payment online. If you still cannot pay online after the 2 hours have passed, Council asks you to phone 1300 012 747.

What if I cannot pay all at once?

Council says you can apply to pay a fine in instalments. There are two ways to arrange a payment plan: phone 1300 012 747, or tick the instalment option on the back of your fine and mail it to Brisbane City Council, GPO Box 589, Brisbane Qld 4001.

The warning that goes with this is worth repeating: if you are paying by instalments, contact Council to arrange the plan before the due date to avoid additional fees. A separate note on the page says anyone in financial hardship who needs an extension of the due date, or a payment plan, should phone the same number, 1300 012 747.

What if I was not the driver?

Council lists one item among its important points: if you were not the driver, you can submit a known user declaration. The page we read does not set out the steps for that declaration, so follow the instructions on your notice or on Council’s website.

How do I check the details of my fine?

Council’s online review tool takes the infringement number and other relevant information, then shows the fine details, including the offence location and photographs. From the same service you can pay the fine, apply for a payment plan or request a review of your infringement notice.

How do I dispute a Brisbane parking fine?

You can dispute a Council-issued parking fine online or by mail. Council’s advice before you lodge anything is to review the details of your infringement notice and make sure you have evidence to support your case. The detailed dispute process sits on a separate Council page, which we have not summarised here.

How much do common parking offences cost?

Parking fines are calculated from penalty units set in legislation. Council says the penalty unit value is $172.70 as of 1 July 2026, and the total is rounded down to the nearest dollar. Here are the main groups from Council’s list of common offences.

Why do older articles show different amounts?

The dollar figure for each offence depends on the penalty unit value, and Council ties the figures above to $172.70 from 1 July 2026. A fine amount quoted in an older article or forum post may have been worked out from a different penalty unit value, so rely on the amount printed on your notice and on Council’s current page.
