Translink service update, last reviewed 16 October 2026

The Bulimba ferry terminal closes from Monday 9 November 2026 until mid-December for essential maintenance, so the F21 cross-river ferries stop at Hawthorne instead, and Translink has put on route 232, a weekday shuttle (shuttle 23) and extra route 230 trips as alternatives. The Hawthorne and Apollo Road terminals stay open.

This guide uses Translink’s temporary closure notice, last reviewed on Friday 16 October at 11:40am, and Brisbane City Council’s ferry terminal program page, both checked on Tuesday 20 October 2026. Translink asks passengers to replan their travel from Monday 9 November, and Council says to allow additional travel time during the works.

Why is the terminal closing?

Council says more than 1,100 passengers board at Bulimba ferry terminal each day, which it describes as one of the busiest suburban ferry terminals in its network. After the major 2014 upgrade, the gangway needs essential maintenance and renewal works. The Bulimba works will replace key components that connect the gangway to the shore and the pontoon, and other components that help support and stabilise the gangway. Council says the full closure will let it finish the works safely.

What happens to the F21 ferry?

Translink says the F21 ferries that normally run between Teneriffe and Bulimba will stop at Hawthorne instead. Timetables will change slightly because of the extra distance for each river crossing. Check the journey planner for the exact times. Hawthorne ferry terminal (Stop ID 317583) stays open and is served by the F1 CityCat, the F11 Express CityCat and the F21.

Which buses replace the ferry?

Service What Translink says
Route 232 A regular timetabled service between Cannon Hill interchange and Brisbane City. It stops close to both the Bulimba and Hawthorne terminals and does not run on Sundays.
Shuttle 23 Weekday peak times between stops close to the Bulimba and Hawthorne terminals. Morning peak from Bulimba to Hawthorne, 6am to 9am. Afternoon peak from Hawthorne to Bulimba, 3pm to 7pm.
Route 230 Additional trips late at night and on Sundays to help travel between Bulimba ferry terminal and Brisbane City. It does not stop near Hawthorne ferry terminal.

Translink says the 232 and shuttle 23 together give approximately a 10-minute frequency in the peaks.

Route 230 extra trips

  • Monday to Saturday: additional outbound services from Brisbane City every 60 minutes from 7pm until 11pm.
  • Sundays: an earlier first service departing at 7am, approximately a 45-minute frequency during the day, and a later last service at approximately 8pm.

The extra trips will appear in the journey planner.

What else is happening at the nearby terminals?

Council is coordinating works at three ferry terminals on the Bulimba peninsula. Its stages are: site preparation at Apollo Road from late September 2026, works at Bulimba from 9 November, works at Apollo Road from the end of November, Bulimba works complete in mid-December, and Apollo Road works complete in early 2027. At Apollo Road, the works include upgrading seating and signage, providing additional shelter and improving lighting and safety features. At Hawthorne, Council says it is starting investigations to inform future works to restore the heritage-listed building. Council says Apollo Road and Hawthorne ferry terminals will remain open for the duration of the maintenance program.
