The Gong Shuttle is a free bus that runs a loop around the Wollongong CBD, routes 55A and 55C, every 10 minutes on weekdays until 6pm, then every 20 minutes until 10pm, as of October 2026. It links Wollongong Station, Wollongong Hospital, Burelli Street, the Innovation Campus and the University of Wollongong.
Premier Illawarra runs the service, and its public transport page says the Gong Shuttle and the separate North Gong Shuttle are completely free. This guide sets out the route, the hours, the places it serves and the points where official sources disagree. We read the pages on Saturday 24 October 2026.
Where does the Gong Shuttle go?
The shuttle runs in both directions on a loop from Wollongong Station to the University of Wollongong, stopping at key destinations including Wollongong Hospital, Burelli Street and the Innovation Campus, according to Premier Illawarra and Transport for NSW. The Wollongong CBD website adds Wollongong Mall and Fairy Meadow to the list of places on the loop.
City of Wollongong’s public transport page says the shuttle links the centre of Wollongong with the railway station, the hospital, TAFE and University campuses, and beaches. It says the shuttle runs every 10 to 20 minutes.
| Route | Direction of the loop |
|---|---|
| 55A | Anticlockwise |
| 55C | Clockwise |

The Wollongong CBD website says you can jump on and off at any of the marked bus stops. The Council links a map for each route, one for the 55A anticlockwise loop and one for the 55C clockwise loop, so check the map for the exact stops.
What are the hours?
| Day | Premier Illawarra (operator) | Transport for NSW event pages |
|---|---|---|
| Weekdays | 7am to 6pm every 10 minutes; 6pm to 10pm every 20 minutes | Same |
| Saturdays | 9:40am to 5:20pm every 20 minutes | 9am to 5.20pm every 20 minutes |
| Sundays and public holidays | 9:40am to 5:20pm every 20 minutes | 9.40am to 5.20pm, up to 20 minutes apart |
The two sources agree on weekdays, Sundays and public holidays. They differ on when the shuttle starts on Saturdays: the operator lists 9:40am, and the Transport for NSW event pages for WIN Stadium and WIN Entertainment Centre list 9am. An older Destination Wollongong page, which refers to a route change in February 2021, gives a different weekend window of 8am to 6pm. We use the operator’s page as the main source, so check the Trip Planner or call Premier Illawarra on 131 500 if you need a specific Saturday morning trip.
Premier Illawarra’s FAQ on public holidays says limited bus services operate on New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and points to the Trip Planner for details. The page does not say whether that applies to the Gong Shuttle, so check before you rely on it on those days.

Can I use it for the hospital?
Yes, Wollongong Hospital is on the loop. The hospital car park charges fees after the first 30 minutes, and our Wollongong Hospital parking guide sets out the rates, so the shuttle is one way to avoid them. The Council says the shuttle links the centre with the hospital, and the Premier Illawarra and Transport for NSW pages both list the hospital as a stop on the loop.
Can I use it for events at WIN Stadium?
Transport for NSW’s event pages for the Rugby League World Cup at WIN Stadium and for NBL games at WIN Entertainment Centre say you can catch the free Gong Shuttle from Crown Street, which stops near the venue, and that it runs in both directions. The Council’s special events parking page names the shuttle as route 55 and says it is available depending on the time and day.
Check the hours above before you plan a night event. On weekdays the shuttle runs until 10pm, while on Saturdays and Sundays the listed hours end at 5:20pm, which is earlier than a late finish. Our guide to the Rugby League World Cup match at WIN Stadium on Friday 30 October covers that evening, and our Wollongong CBD parking guide covers the Council’s car parks.

Is it the same as the North Gong Shuttle?
No. Premier Illawarra also runs the North Gong Shuttle, routes 9 and 9N, a free bus between North Wollongong Station and the University of Wollongong. The page says the service is available for students and staff at the university, runs on weekdays, and uses fully electric, low-floor, wheelchair-accessible buses.
The Gong Shuttle, routes 55A and 55C, is the loop around the CBD. The Premier page points people travelling from the CBD, the hospital precinct or the Innovation Campus to the 55A and 55C loop for frequent trips to and from the university.

Who pays for it?
The Council says the Gong Shuttle is jointly funded by Wollongong City Council, Transport for NSW and the University of Wollongong. It also says that in 2024 it confirmed its continued support of the service over the next three years.
What are the rules on board?
Premier Illawarra’s passenger notes, which cover its bus services in general, ask passengers to press the stop request button as they approach their stop and to take a seat quickly after boarding. The front seats should be left for elderly and disabled passengers. Eating and drinking, including chewing gum, are not allowed, and smoking and vaping are prohibited on all buses under NSW Government regulations.
Folded strollers travel free of charge, and guide dogs accompanying blind or deaf passengers travel free on all buses. The operator is not responsible for items left on a bus, and lost property is reported through Transport for NSW.

How early should I be at the stop, and what if the bus is late?
Premier Illawarra suggests arriving at the bus stop 5 minutes before the published time. It says buses may occasionally run behind schedule because of circumstances beyond its control, and that every effort is made to regain timetabled running as soon as possible. With a bus every 10 minutes on weekdays until 6pm, a missed trip means a short wait, while the weekday evening and weekend gaps are 20 minutes.
Is it wheelchair accessible?
Premier Illawarra says services shown with a wheelchair symbol in its timetable are scheduled to use a low-floor accessible bus. It adds that occasionally, because of operational requirements, it cannot guarantee that a service will use an accessible bus, and asks passengers to call the office during business hours to confirm their travel needs. The Premier Illawarra number for general questions is (02) 4271 1322.
Who do I contact?
For help with bus timetables, Premier Illawarra asks passengers to call 131 500. For Opal card problems it lists 13 67 25. For route planning, fares and real-time service updates, it points to Transport for NSW. Hours and routes can change, so check the Trip Planner before you travel.
