Salamanca Place is closed to vehicles every Saturday for Salamanca Market, so the easy ways in are on foot, by bus to the Hobart bus mall, or by parking in one of the nearby car parks. The market runs every Saturday from 8:30am to 3pm, and the market’s own page says the old market shuttle bus no longer operates.
This guide covers the road closure, the bus, bike, motor home and rideshare options, and the car parks the City of Hobart lists near the waterfront. It draws on Salamanca Market’s Getting to the market page and the City of Hobart’s car park and road closure pages. The market page and the council’s car park pages were read on Sunday 25 October 2026, and the council’s road closures page and Argyle Street fee table on Wednesday 21 October 2026. The next market day is Saturday 31 October.

When is Salamanca Place closed?
The market says there is a road closure on Saturdays and that Salamanca Place, between Montpelier Retreat and the Silo’s, is closed to vehicles from 5am to 5:30pm. The City of Hobart’s temporary road closures page lists Salamanca Place as closed every Saturday from 5:30am to 6pm for the market.
The two sources differ by half an hour at the start and the end. Treat the longer span, from 5am to 6pm, as the window to avoid, and follow the signs on the day. The market describes Salamanca Market and the entire waterfront area as a hive of activity on a Saturday.
Is there anything else closed on weekends?
On Sundays, the council’s list shows Bathurst Street between Murray and Elizabeth streets, and Criterion Street, closed from 6am to 3pm every Sunday for the Farm Gate Market. That is a separate market and not part of the Saturday closure.
How do I get there by bus?
The market says the Hobart bus mall is at 22 Elizabeth Street, a short 7-minute walk from the market. It also states plainly that the Salamanca Market shuttle bus is no longer operating, so older guides that mention a shuttle are out of date.

Metro Tasmania bus travel is currently free across the state; our guide to free bus travel in Tasmania explains what the scheme covers and when it ends.
Can I ride a bike to the market?
Yes. The market says the city is connected by the intercity cycleway, and that the market has three bike racks. The scenic route follows the river and nature areas all the way from Claremont to the Hobart waterfront and the market, and the market says it is over 15 km. It adds that it is possible to cycle between Mona, the Royal Hobart Botanical Gardens and Salamanca Market. Our guide to getting to Mona covers the ferry from Brooke Street Pier.
Where do I park?
The market encourages visitors to use the multiple car parks in the Hobart city centre and links to the council’s list of car parks. The council says its multi-storey car parks provide more than 2,500 bays, are cheaper than on-street parking and include free parking for the first 60 minutes.

| Car park | Where | What the council says |
|---|---|---|
| Salamanca Square | 20 Montpelier Retreat, Battery Point (underground) | Open 8:30am to 8:00pm daily. Fees apply 8:30am to 6:30pm. Height limit 2.2 metres. Pay with EasyPark or voucher. Three accessible spaces. No vehicle entry after 8pm; cars can leave until 10pm. |
| Dunn Place | 3 Davey Street, next to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery | Open 24 hours. Fees apply 8am to 8pm. Pay with EasyPark or a meter. Two accessible spaces and EV charging. |
| Argyle Street | 38 Argyle Street | Largest multi-storey car park in the CBD, 1,155 bays, open 6:30am to 10pm daily, 2 metre height limit. |
| Centrepoint | 35 Victoria Street | Multi-storey car park that is part of the Centrepoint Shopping Centre. |
The council describes Salamanca Square as ideal for visiting Salamanca Market, and says Dunn Place is within walking distance of the CBD, the waterfront and Salamanca. The council pages for Salamanca Square and Dunn Place point to its fees and charges page instead of listing prices, so check the sign or the EasyPark app for the Saturday rate. Our Argyle Street Car Park guide has the council’s fee table for that car park, and its multi-storey table gives the first hour free.

What will a few hours in a multi-storey car park cost?
The council’s multi-storey fee table, shown on its Argyle Street Car Park page, charges cars nothing for the first hour, then $6 for one to two hours, $10 for two to three hours, $13 for three to four hours and $17 for four to five hours. The same table shows $27 for seven hours or more. Sundays and public holidays have their own rate: first hour free, then $3 an hour, maximum $11. These figures are for Argyle Street, as of October 2026, and the page for each car park is the place to check its own prices before you rely on them for another car park.
Which other council car parks are near the centre?
The council’s list of ten car parks also includes Hobart Central at 60 Melville Street and the Melville Street (Midtown) car park at 49 Melville Street. Its list does not say how far either is from the market, so the car parks in the table above are the ones to start with.
What about motor homes?
The market says parking a motor home in the city can be tricky. It often recommends the Evans Street car park, then walking along the waterfront to the market. The walk is on a flat surface and takes about 7 minutes.
Can I take a taxi or Uber?
The market says Uber now services a wide area of Southern Tasmania and there are plenty to be found around the city, and that a number of taxi companies are available for Hobart and surrounds. The page does not name a pick-up point near Salamanca Place.
Where should I stay?
Salamanca Market is on the Hobart waterfront and, according to the market, within walking distance of a large range of hotels. It suggests the Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre can help you choose where to stay so you are within walking distance on Saturday.

Quick plan
- By bus: get to the Hobart bus mall at 22 Elizabeth Street and walk about 7 minutes. There is no shuttle.

- By motor home: Evans Street car park, then about 7 minutes along the waterfront.
- By bike: the intercity cycleway to one of the three racks.
- Avoid Salamanca Place between Montpelier Retreat and the Silo’s from 5am to 6pm on Saturdays.
