The Shaw and Partners Iron Series opens its 2026/27 season at Thirroul Beach on Saturday 14 November and Sunday 15 November 2026. The series’ own page puts the racing at 1pm to 3pm AEDT on both days, and says Channel 10 will broadcast it.

This brief uses the series’ Thirroul round page, its race formats and disciplines pages, and the Destination Wollongong listing. If you are heading to the northern suburbs that weekend for other reasons, the Wollongong council’s timed beach parking limits are covered in a separate guide.

What time are the races at Thirroul?

The Iron Series round page lists both days as 1pm to 3pm AEDT, Channel 10. New South Wales is on daylight saving time in November, so AEDT is the local time in Thirroul. The Destination Wollongong listing shows the same two days but gives 12:00pm to 2:00pm. The organiser’s page is the one that describes the broadcast.

Day Race format Order
Saturday 14 November Enduro: soft sand run, then Board, Swim, Ski three times Male Iron athletes race before female Iron athletes
Sunday 15 November Super Sprint: three races (Swim, Board, Ski in a different order each time) Races alternate between female and male Iron athletes

The series also lists a Repechage Round at 1pm AEDT on Friday 13 November. Ten competitors were eliminated after the Coolangatta Gold, and the Repechage gives them a chance to requalify; the top four make it back into the series for the Super Sprint, and the bottom six are eliminated. The round page does not give the venue for that Friday race.

What is the Enduro?

The series describes the Enduro as “the dreaded” race: a 40-minute Iron race with three Board legs, three Swim legs and three Ski legs, started by a soft sand run of about three to four minutes. It is held at Thirroul on Saturday 14 November.

The three water disciplines work like this, according to the series:

  • Swim: athletes swim around the first set of cans, the ones closest to shore, and back to the beach.
  • Board: competitors race around the middle set of cans and try to catch a wave into shore.
  • Ski: the fastest discipline. Athletes carry the surf ski into the water and paddle around the last and furthest set of cans.

Between each discipline there is a run across the soft sand, and the athletes pass through the finish arch and competition area several times in a race. The series suggests standing close to the arena to cheer them over the sand.

What is the Super Sprint on Sunday?

The Super Sprint is three traditional Iron races, with points for the first two. The winner of the third race is the Super Sprint winner. Nobody is eliminated; instead the final race has a staggered start, so athletes who did well earlier get a head start and the rest must catch up.

Race Order of legs
Race 1 Swim, Board, Ski
Race 2 Board, Ski, Swim
Race 3 Ski, Swim, Board

The top 20 Iron athletes after the two days at Thirroul go through to Newcastle. All points they earn are kept until the Eliminator race at Newcastle on 10 January 2027. The series’ formats page also lists the Specialist at Newcastle on 9 January 2027, a second Super Sprint at Surfers Paradise on 6 February 2027 and the Grand Eliminator at Surfers Paradise on Sunday 7 February 2027.

Can children take part?

Yes, within limits. The Shaw and Partners Iron Series Nipper Challenge runs as a lead-in to the Thirroul races, on the same arena as the elite athletes. Nippers aged 11 to 14 can enter:

Age group Day
Under 11 and under 12 Saturday 14 November
Under 13 and under 14 Sunday 15 November

Entries are made through Liveheats and are strictly capped at 32 per age group. The podium finishers in each age group receive a gold, silver or bronze medal. The round page links an entry circular for the details.

How do I get to Thirroul Beach?

The series recommends the South Coast Line: get off at Thirroul Station and walk about 10 minutes to the beach. Destination Wollongong’s listing gives the location as The Esplanade, Thirroul, and shows a carpark, a cafe, public toilets, and a shop among the facilities, with wheelchair access and a family-friendly, pet-friendly (enquire) tag.

If you drive down the Grand Pacific Drive, the series asks you to give yourself extra time on event days, because the free parking around the beach fills fast. Neither page lists road closures or a park-and-ride, and this brief does not guess at either.

What else is there to do nearby?

The series’ round page suggests making a day of it. Thirroul sits just north of the Wollongong city centre, about an hour south of Sydney. Heading south leads to Wollongong’s beaches, harbourside restaurants and arts precinct, and heading north across the Sea Cliff Bridge leads to Bald Hill Lookout, which the page describes as one of the best coastal views on the NSW coast.

Can the details change?

Yes. The start time differs between the two official pages, entry costs are not stated, and surf events depend on conditions. The organiser’s site is ironseries.com.au.
