Newcastle Airport at Williamtown is served by two public bus operators, and the Port Stephens Coaches buses to Newcastle Interchange take between 29 and 40 minutes in the operator’s timetable. You pay with an Opal card or by tapping on and off with an American Express, Mastercard or Visa card, as of October 2026.

The Newcastle Airport public transport page says two public bus companies serve the airport seven days a week: Hunter Valley Buses and Port Stephens Coaches. This guide sets out what each one covers, what the Port Stephens Coaches timetable shows for trips between the airport and Newcastle Interchange, how to pay, and the taxi, rideshare and pick-up options.

Which bus goes from the airport to Newcastle Interchange?

Port Stephens Coaches runs the service to Newcastle Interchange. Newcastle Airport says it operates from the airport to the Newcastle Interchange up to 11 times a day, as well as to the Nelson Bay area. The operator’s timetables list the Newcastle trips under routes 130 and 131, labelled “Fingal Bay to Newcastle via Nelson Bay, Salamander Bay & Airport”. The stop in the timetable is Newcastle Interchange, Stand B for buses arriving from the airport and Stand A for buses leaving towards the airport.

The timetable PDFs on the Port Stephens Coaches timetables page carry the line “Effective from 21 July 2025”, and the operator notes that times are subject to change without notice. Newcastle Transport’s website says its bus and light rail timetables changed from 11 October, which is a separate network. Use the Trip Planner or the Departures page on transportnsw.info for the current time before you travel.

What time are the buses from the airport on a weekday?

These are the Monday to Friday trips in the Port Stephens Coaches PDF that stop at Newcastle Airport and finish at Newcastle Interchange, with the times shown for each stop:

18:30 19:02
19:15 19:44
19:38 20:10
21:50 22:19

The timetable lists more trips than the “up to 11 times a day” figure on the airport’s page, so treat the airport’s number as a rough guide and check the Trip Planner for the trips running on your day. The times above are 24-hour times from the PDF. In that timetable the first weekday bus to Newcastle Interchange leaves the airport at 05:30 and the last leaves at 21:50, and the journey time from the airport stop to the Interchange ranges from 29 to 40 minutes.

What about Saturday, Sunday and public holidays?

The weekend and public holiday timetable has fewer trips. The Port Stephens Coaches PDF lists these buses from the airport to Newcastle Interchange:

The timetable also lists a later trip, leaving the airport at 21:00 and arriving at Newcastle Interchange at 21:31, marked with an S. The PDF explains the S as a bus that operates Saturday only, so that trip does not run on Sundays or public holidays.

Which buses go to Maitland, Raymond Terrace and Stockton?

Newcastle Airport says Hunter Valley Buses operates a public bus service from the airport to Maitland, Raymond Terrace and Stockton. It tells passengers to visit the Hunter Valley Buses website or call (02) 4935 7200 for daily timetables. When we checked, the Hunter Valley Buses web page was blocked by the site’s security service from our browser, so we could not read its timetables. Check them with the operator or in the Trip Planner.

How do I pay for the bus?

Both operators accept credit cards or Opal cards on all routes, according to Newcastle Airport. The airport says Opal cards are not sold there, but you do not need an Opal card to travel to and from the airport, because contactless payments by American Express, Mastercard and Visa are accepted.

Port Stephens Coaches’ timetable says that if you tap on and off with a contactless card or a linked device such as a phone or smart watch, you are charged an Adult Opal fare and get the same benefits and discounts as an Adult Opal card, as long as you consistently tap on and off with the same card or device. If you use an overseas-issued card, its issuer may charge foreign transaction fees.

Port Stephens Coaches is an Opal card reseller. Adult and Child Opal cards can be bought at its Anna Bay office.

How much is the fare?

Fares are based on distance from tap on to tap off. Transport for NSW’s adult Opal fares page lists these bus fares:

Distance Adult peak fare Adult off-peak fare
0 to 3 km $3.30 $2.31
3 to 8 km $4.49 $3.14
8+ km $5.77 $4.03

None of the pages we read gives the fare from Newcastle Airport to Newcastle Interchange, so use the Trip Planner or the Opal Travel app to see it before you travel. Remember to tap off. If you forget, Transport for NSW says you are charged the default fare, the maximum possible fare for that service.

Is there a taxi rank or rideshare pick-up?

  • Taxis: the taxi rank is next to the departures end of the terminal. Book a taxi on 133 300 or online.
  • Uber and DiDi: the designated rideshare pick-up area is in the public pick-up zone outside the arrivals end of the terminal. Order your ride before you walk to the pick-up area to cut your wait.

Where can friends or family pick me up?

Newcastle Airport says passengers can only be dropped off at the departures end of the terminal and picked up outside the arrivals end. All pick-up and drop-off zones are no-parking zones for immediate loading and unloading only, and leaving a vehicle unattended can lead to an infringement notice.

If you want to wait, you can park in the Long Stay Saver car park for up to 2 hours for free, then head to the pick-up and drop-off zone once your passenger is ready.
