Cavill Avenue, the Gold Coast Highway and Surfers Paradise Boulevard are fully closed in Surfers Paradise on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights, from Monday 12 October at 8:00pm until 5:00am on Saturday 7 November. Only local traffic can get in, and the City of Gold Coast says the work is utilities work.

The closure overlaps the build of the Gold Coast 500 street circuit in the same suburb. Here is what the City has published, what it has not, and what else is changing nearby.

What exactly is closed, and when?

The City of Gold Coast’s road closures list gives the following details for the Surfers Paradise entry:

Item What the City says
Streets Cavill Avenue; Gold Coast Highway; Surfers Paradise Boulevard
Window Monday 12 October 2026, 8:00pm, to Saturday 7 November 2026, 5:00am
Impact Full road closure, local traffic access only
Reason Planned utilities work
Days “Works will be done on Monday nights to Wednesday nights only”

That means the roads are not closed around the clock for four weeks. Counting only Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights inside the window gives 12 nights:

  • Monday 12, Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 October
  • Monday 19, Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 October
  • Monday 26, Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 October
  • Monday 2, Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 November

Thursday to Sunday nights are not on the City’s list for this utilities work. The same streets are covered by separate Gold Coast 500 closures and traffic changes (see below), so check both before you drive.

What has the City not said?

The listing names three streets but does not say which sections are closed, and it does not give nightly start and finish times. The only times published are the start of the whole window (8:00pm on Monday 12 October) and its end (5:00am on 7 November). It also does not say whether the closure covers the Cavill Avenue and Gold Coast Highway intersection, a stretch of the highway or all of the named streets at once.

The listing does not mention trams or buses, and it does not say whether G:link services are affected. Check translink.com.au or call 13 12 30 before you travel in the evening.

Can I still get to my accommodation or work?

The City describes the closure as “local traffic access only” but has not said who counts as local traffic. It has not published a detour map for this entry either. If you are staying in or driving into Surfers Paradise after dark on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, allow extra time.

How does this fit with the Gold Coast 500 build?

This closure is separate from the Gold Coast 500 road closures, which the City lists under a different entry running from 11 September to 14 November. That entry covers Main Beach Parade, Breaker Street, Tedder Avenue, Cronin Avenue, Serisier Avenue, Hill Parade, Cable Street, Surfers Paradise Boulevard, Ocean Avenue, Ferny Avenue and the Gold Coast Highway, among other streets. Two entries therefore name Surfers Paradise Boulevard and the Gold Coast Highway at the same time.

Supercars’ Build Notice 05, for the week beginning Tuesday 6 October, lists these day-time works (the notice is the latest one we found on the Supercars site on 12 October, and later notices may change the dates):

Location Traffic change When
Serisier Avenue and Hill Parade Full road closure, local access maintained, diversions in place Thursday and Friday, 7:00am to 5:00pm
Gold Coast Highway (northbound) Fast-lane closure Tuesday to Friday, 7:00am to 5:00pm
Ferny Avenue at Surfers Paradise Boulevard Stop and slow traffic management Tuesday and Wednesday, 7:00am to 5:00pm
Breaker Street (between Tedder Avenue and Cronin Avenue) Stop and slow traffic management Wednesday, 7:00am to 5:00pm

Supercars says build work runs Monday to Saturday, 7:00am to 6:00pm, and that road and park users can expect changed traffic conditions for seven weeks, until mid-November. The notice also says G:link access “will be maintained at all times”.

Put together, a Tuesday or Wednesday can mean lane and stop-and-slow changes during the day and a full utilities closure from 8:00pm. The Gold Coast Highway and Surfers Paradise Boulevard appear in both the City’s night closure and the day-time works.

Are buses affected nearby?

Translink has closed several Main Beach Parade stops for the Gold Coast 500 from Tuesday 13 October to Tuesday 3 November. Route 705 and school services use alternative stops: Main Beach Parade at Woodroffe Avenue, open until Sunday 18 October, and Ferny Avenue at Ocean Avenue, open until Saturday 17 October. The Esplanade stop closes from Sunday 18 October, and the Woodroffe Avenue, Main Beach Tourist Park, Cable Street and Breaker Street stops close from Monday 19 October. After that, Translink lists the Surfers Paradise stop, a stop near Stafford Avenue and a temporary stop on Main Beach Parade as open for route 705. These changes are separate from the Cavill Avenue closure, but they apply in the same part of town. Our Gold Coast 500 transport and parking guide covers the race weekend.

Who should check before leaving?

  • Drivers using the Gold Coast Highway or Surfers Paradise Boulevard through the middle of Surfers Paradise after 8:00pm on Mondays to Wednesdays.
  • Staff and diners at Cavill Avenue and nearby venues who arrive or leave late on those nights.
  • Anyone staying in Surfers Paradise accommodation who is arriving by car on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evening.

The City of Gold Coast updates its road closures list as work changes, so check it before heading out. For tram and bus services, Translink’s contact centre is on 13 12 30.
