When the free evening parking ends, and whether it covers every ACT Government car park in the city or only the ones named

Canberra Theatre Centre says there is free parking on Wednesday to Sunday evenings from 5:30pm at Canberra City public car parks, and that the Theatre Lane car park behind the building is closed because of the city centre construction. For a show on a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday night that means the free spaces at City Hill and the Olympic Pool car park are the obvious first choice; on a Monday or Tuesday, they are not covered by the wording on the page.

This guide uses the Theatre Centre’s own location and parking page, the operators’ pages for the paid car parks nearby, and the ACT Government’s Built for CBR travel impacts page. Prices and rules are as at 28 October 2026 and can change.

Is parking really free near Canberra Theatre Centre in the evening?

The Theatre Centre’s page says there is “free parking available Wednesday to Sunday evenings from 5:30pm” at Canberra City public car parks, and names two of them: City Hill car park (Section 116) and the Canberra Olympic Pool car park in the city’s south-east. The page gives no end date for the arrangement and does not say whether every ACT Government surface car park in the city is included, so treat the two named car parks as the safe choices and read the signs and ticket machine when you arrive.

The page lists other ACT Government surface car parks as options for theatre-goers: the Olympic Pool car park at 36 Constitution Avenue, the car park opposite CIT Reid on the corner of Constitution Avenue and Coranderrk Street, and the Hobart Place car park, which is entered from Marcus Clarke Street. It does not say which of them are inside the free window, which is why the Not yet confirmed line in the box above is there.

Night of the week Free evening parking from 5:30pm? What to do
Monday No (outside the stated Wednesday to Sunday window) Pay at the ticket machine or use a paid car park
Tuesday No As Monday
Wednesday Yes, at the named car parks Free from 5:30pm at the named car parks
Thursday Yes As Wednesday
Friday Yes Allow extra time for the roadworks
Saturday Yes A daytime arrival before 5:30pm falls outside the free window
Sunday Yes As Saturday

The week-by-week table follows the wording on the Theatre Centre page. The theatre does not publish a list of dates, so it cannot say which individual shows are covered; the day of the week and the 5:30pm start are the only conditions it states.

Which shows come up next at the Theatre Centre?

The Theatre Centre’s What’s On page lists these dates in the next three weeks (the page gives dates, not session times, so check your ticket for the start time):

Show Dates in 2026 Day of the week
Hindley Street Country Club 30 October Friday
The Illusion Effect; Lawrence Mooney – Full Moon Party 31 October Saturday
Where is the Green Sheep?; Fountain Lakes: Y2k 6 to 9 November; 6 and 7 November Friday to Monday; Friday and Saturday
The Dollop – Down Under 8 10 November Tuesday
Bring Your Group Chat – Zoë Foster Blake; James Morrison with Special Guest Mahalia Barnes 11 November Wednesday
Denise Scott – Tickety Boo; Victorian State Ballet: The Nutcracker 13 November; 13 and 14 November Friday; Friday and Saturday

Against the free-parking window, the Tuesday 10 November show (The Dollop) sits outside it, and so does the Monday 9 November performance of Where is the Green Sheep?. The Wednesday to Saturday dates fall inside it, but the page gives no session times, so a daytime session (a matinee, for example) would start before 5:30pm.

What is closed around the Theatre Centre?

The Theatre Centre says the largest transformation in the city centre’s history is under way, including early works for a new lyric theatre, and asks patrons to allow additional time because parking near the building has reduced capacity and demand is up. Two closures matter if you drive:

  • Theatre Lane, the small road behind the building, is closed, and so is the Theatre Lane car park.
  • There are full road closures and lane closures on Northbourne Avenue, London Circuit, Constitution Avenue and surrounding roads, according to the Theatre Centre.

The ACT Government is building the new lyric theatre on the north side of The Playhouse, with $317 million for the main construction works. Its project page says foundation works are nearly complete and the building is starting to rise above ground. The ACT Government’s Built for CBR site also lists Commonwealth Avenue northbound, between Albert Street and the Parkes Way ramp, as reduced to a single lane from 8pm on Friday 16 October for about five weeks.

How much do the paid car parks cost?

The Theatre Centre lists nine places to park. The two paid car parks with prices published by their operators are Constitution Place and 5 Nangari Street, and the prices below come from those operators’ own pages.

Car park Where Evening price (as at 28 October 2026)
Constitution Place (underground) Off Constitution Avenue; closest to the Theatre Centre, per the Theatre Centre Monday to Friday 5pm to 5am: $2 up to 40 minutes, $3.30 up to 1 hour, $4.50 up to 1.5 hours, $5.50 up to 2 hours, $6.60 up to 3 hours, $7.80 up to 4 hours, $11 for 4 hours or more
Constitution Place, weekend Same car park Friday 5pm to Monday 5am: same rates as the night rates above, capped at $11
5 Nangari Street (off Rabaul Lane) Wilson Parking, entry off Rabaul Lane, height limit 2.15 metres Theatre and Dinner rate: $4 on the Theatre Centre page, $5 on the Wilson Parking page, Monday to Friday, enter after 5pm and exit before midnight; weekend flat rate $4 a day
Canberra Centre southern car park 1,200 spaces, open 24 hours, lift from the ground floor Prices are on the Canberra Centre’s own parking page, which this guide could not load; check before you go

Constitution Place has 560 basement bays, 225 of them for public use, with a height limit of 2.2 metres. It records your licence plate when you enter and you pay at the boom gate when you leave. The building’s car park roller shutter closes at midnight and reopens at 5am, but the page says exit is still available during that time, so a late show does not trap you inside. The rate tables also list a $12.50 overnight fee. The page does not say when it applies, so do not plan to leave a car in there overnight.

The Theatre Centre and Wilson Parking disagree on the 5 Nangari Street price: $4 on the Theatre Centre page, $5 on the Wilson Parking page for the same Theatre and Dinner rate. Budget for the higher figure and read the price at the entrance. A weekend flat rate of $4 a day applies from midnight Friday to midnight Sunday, with public holidays charged at weekend rates, according to Wilson Parking.

How do I pay at an ACT Government car park?

The Theatre Centre’s page says ticket machines at ACT Government surface car parks take coins ($2, $1, 50c, 20c, 10c), Visa and Mastercard, and the free EasyPark app. If you pay with EasyPark you do not need to display a ticket, because inspectors can check the payment electronically. If you pay with coins or a card, the ticket must sit face up on the dashboard with the expiry time visible from outside the car, or it is not valid.

The page tells drivers to check the ticket machine carefully, so they pay the right fee and follow any time limit. During the free evening window the machine should show no charge, but the safest habit is to read the sign at the entrance before walking away.

Where is the nearest accessible parking and drop-off?

  • Accessible permit parking is at City Hill and Hobart Place car parks, according to the Theatre Centre.
  • The page also says six accessible spaces are available in the Theatre Lane car park. The same page says that car park is closed. The two statements conflict, so call the box office before you rely on those six spaces.
  • The closest accessible drop-off and pick-up point is on Constitution Avenue, in the Lyric Lane turning circle. The Theatre Centre has a downloadable accessible drop-off and pick-up instruction sheet on the page.

Is it easier to take the bus or the tram?

The Theatre Centre says the Alinga Street light rail terminal and the City bus interchange are about 300 metres’ walk from the building, and that 22 Park and Ride locations across the ACT let you park for free and travel by bus or light rail. MyWay+ is the ticketing system on both.

Light rail has a weekend closure on 31 October and 1 November. The Built for CBR page says all light rail services will be replaced by buses on those days, between Alinga Street and Gungahlin Place in both directions, because of works to extend light rail from the city to Commonwealth Park, and regular services resume on Monday 2 November. A Saturday night 31 October show, such as The Illusion Effect or Lawrence Mooney’s Full Moon Party, would fall inside that replacement-bus period, so check the Transport Canberra timetable for the replacement bus before you set off.

What about taxis and rideshare?

There is a Taxi Butler call button across from the box office, served by ACT Cabs, according to the Theatre Centre. Cab Spot 11, at the Courtyard Studio entrance and the Canberra Theatre stage door, is connected to Canberra Elite Taxis. The page does not describe a rideshare pick-up point, so ask your driver to stop at a legal point nearby. The Lyric Lane turning circle is named by the Theatre Centre as the closest accessible drop-off and pick-up location.

What should I do before leaving home?

  • Check the weekday: free from 5:30pm applies Wednesday to Sunday only.
  • Pick two car parks, so you have a fallback if the first is full. City Hill, the Olympic Pool car park and Constitution Place are all on or near Constitution Avenue.
  • Allow extra time for roadworks on London Circuit, Constitution Avenue and Northbourne Avenue.
  • If you use the tram on 31 October or 1 November, plan for the replacement bus.
  • For a late finish, remember Constitution Place’s roller shutter closes at midnight; exit is still possible.
