There is no free parking for visitors at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Herston, and the four hospital car parks charge between $5 and $49 for a day, depending on the car park and how long you stay. The closest to the main entrance is the Butterfield Street car park, and the cheapest short stays are in the Northern Car Park (P2) on Kauri Pine Street.

This guide uses the hospital’s parking and transport page, last updated in June 2026, and the pages of the operators it links to: Wilson Parking (Butterfield Street), Wilson Parking (Northern Car Park P2), Wilson Parking (Herston Road), Point Parking (Bramston Terrace) and Cornerstone Parking (Butterfield Street, across the road). All were read on Saturday 7 November 2026.

Is there any free parking at the hospital?

No. The hospital’s page says there are three multi-storey undercover car parks on the campus, that charges apply at each one, and that there is no complimentary parking for visitors on the hospital grounds. It adds that parking around Herston and the hospital complex is regulated, that nearby streets are mostly local residents only, and that some metered parking is available. It tells you to visit each operator’s website for current fee rates and opening times, which is what the tables below do.

Which car park is closest to which building?

Car park Where Closest to
Butterfield St Car Park (Wilson Parking) 20 Butterfield Street, next to the Ned Hanlon Building. Entry and exit by Butterfield Street or the circular drive at the main entrance The main entrance. An undercover walkway links it to level 1 of the Ned Hanlon Building
Northern Car Park P2 (Wilson Parking) Kauri Pine Street, Herston, off Butterfield Street. Entry and exit by Kauri Pine Street A footpath of about 300 metres via Butterfield Street leads to the main entrance
Herston Road Car Park (Wilson Parking) 325 Herston Road, at the junction of Gilchrist Avenue and Herston Road The mental health building, Block 7, the Education Centre and QIMR Berghofer
Bramston Terrace Car Park (Point Parking) Bramston Terrace, off Herston Road The Surgical Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS) building

The hospital also lists car parks outside the grounds: the Royal Brisbane Carpark run by Cornerstone Parking at 43 Butterfield Street, across the road from the main hospital, and car parks at the Brisbane Showgrounds and in Wren Street, Bowen Hills. All of the on-campus car parks have designated disability parking bays, according to the hospital.

How much do the car parks cost?

Each operator sets its own prices, and they are shown here as they appeared on its page on Saturday 7 November 2026. Wilson Parking’s pages list the same six steps for the Butterfield Street and Herston Road car parks and a shorter, cheaper scale for the Northern Car Park.

Length of stay Butterfield St (Wilson) Northern P2 (Wilson) Herston Rd (Wilson, Mon to Fri) Bramston Terrace (Point)
Up to 30 minutes $9 $5 $9 $6.60
30 to 60 minutes $17 $10 $17 $13.20
1 to 1.5 hours $25 $20 (1 to 2 hours) $25 $19.80
1.5 to 2 hours $33 $20 (1 to 2 hours) $33 $26.40
2 to 3 hours $42 $30 (2 hours or more) $42 $33 (2 hours or more)
3 hours or more $49 daily maximum $30 (2 hours or more) $49 $33 (2 hours or more)

Two of these have extra rules on their pages. Herston Road charges its hourly rates Monday to Friday, with a weekend rate of $18.50 on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays, and rates start from 5am daily. The Northern Car Park shows a weekend flat rate of $12 per exit, per day. Point Parking’s Bramston Terrace page says rates run from the time you enter to the time you leave, lists a lost-ticket fee of $33. It accepts cash, Visa or Mastercard, and gives the height limit as 2.1 metres. Wilson Parking lists a height limit of 2.10 metres at Butterfield Street and Herston Road and 2.30 metres at the Northern Car Park.

What about the car park across the road?

Cornerstone Parking’s Butterfield Street car park is on the opposite side of the road from the main entrance. Its page describes it as close to the emergency ward and Ronald McDonald House, undercover, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and entered from Butterfield Street. It lists a height clearance of 2.3 metres and accepts cash, debit and credit cards (Mastercard and Visa). Its page says rates start again at 12am each day.

Stay Cornerstone rate
0 to 30 minutes $7
30 minutes to 1 hour $14
1 to 1.5 hours $20
1.5 to 2 hours $27
2 to 3 hours $35
3 hours or more (maximum per day) $45
Weekend (per day) $15

At every step it is cheaper than the Butterfield Street car park run by Wilson Parking: $45 against $49 for a full day, and $7 against $9 for up to 30 minutes. It is not on the hospital grounds, so the hospital’s concession (below) is described for “commercial car parking fees” on the grounds and the page does not say whether it applies here. Ask the Trust Office before you rely on it.

Where are the pick-up and drop-off zones?

There are 2-minute pick-up and drop-off areas for patients and visitors in the hospital grounds: in front of the main entrance off Butterfield Street, outside the entry to the Joyce Twedell Building, and at the entry to the Mental Health Unit. The hospital says people who exceed the two-minute limit may be fined, and that parking fines apply for illegal parking in the grounds. For people with disability, the hospital lists a dedicated drop-off zone at the front, and says to ask a volunteer if you need to borrow a wheelchair.

Is there a discount for patients and carers?

Maybe. Metro North Health says patients or their primary carer may be eligible for discounted parking where commercial car parking fees apply, under three groups.

Group What the hospital says
Extended stay You are an inpatient for the duration of your treatment and have already been an inpatient for 14 consecutive days or longer
Frequent outpatient You attend at least 2 appointments a week for 2 consecutive weeks, and you qualify for the concession in the third week of attendance
Financial hardship and special considerations If you do not fit the groups above, you may be able to apply for special needs

You need a Concessional Car Parking Application Form from the Trust Office during business hours (Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 4pm, according to the concession section of the page) or, after hours, from the Admissions and Enquiries counter. The Trust Office is on the ground floor of the Ned Hanlon Building next to that counter and, in the contact line of the same page, is listed as open Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm. The two sets of hours differ on the page, so call the RBWH switchboard on (07) 3464 8111 before you go. The Wilson Parking page for the Herston Road car park also says concessions for hospital staff and patients are available and links to its own details.

Can I get here by bus or train?

The hospital says there is a bus station next to the hospital and points to the Translink journey planner for the buses that stop there. For trains, it names Brunswick Street station in Fortitude Valley and Bowen Hills station, both about a 1km walk to Central Drive at the hospital. For timetables it gives the Translink hotline on 13 12 30. Our go card and contactless guide explains how to pay for the trip.

Are there taxis and bike parking?

A taxi rank is at the main entrance to the hospital, close to the transit lounge and admission desk. On request, the ward receptionist will telephone for a taxi to meet you at the transit lounge, and free taxi phones are in the main reception areas: the ground floor of the Ned Hanlon Building (Admission Desk), Level 4 of the Joyce Twedell Building (Cancer Care Admissions) and the ground floor of the Dr James Mayne Building, near Emergency.

The RBWH Cycle Centre offers 750 secure bike parking spaces, shower facilities, lockers, a towel service, ironing facilities and hair dryers, in air-conditioned premises with electronic entry and CCTV. The hospital’s page describes it as available to members and casual visitors.
