Brisbane City Council lists three free community carols in the suburbs this December: Centenary Carols at Middle Park and Carols on the Lawn at Seventeen Mile Rocks, both on Sunday 6 December, and Carols by Candlelight at Ashgrove on Saturday 12 December. None needs a booking, and each is described by the council as a community event it supports.
This guide uses Brisbane City Council’s own event pages, read on 7 November 2026, plus the council’s page for Rocks Riverside Park and the Facebook event for Centenary Carols. Where an organiser has not published something, we say so. Queensland has no daylight saving, so every time below is Brisbane time. If you want the council’s large ticketed show instead, see our guide to the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols at Riverstage on Saturday 5 December.

Which carols are on, and when?
| Event | Date and time | Where | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Centenary Carols | Sunday 6 December, 3:30pm to 8:00pm | Peter Lightfoot Oval, Horizon Drive, Middle Park | Free, no bookings |
| Carols on the Lawn | Sunday 6 December, 5:00pm to 10:00pm | Rocks Riverside Park, 5 Counihan Road, Seventeen Mile Rocks | Free entry, no booking |
| Carols by Candlelight | Saturday 12 December, 4:00pm to 8:00pm | Dorrington Park, 5 Mirrabooka Road, Ashgrove | Free, no bookings |
What is on at Centenary Carols in Middle Park?
The council describes Centenary Carols as a free, family friendly evening with food vans, a rock climbing wall, free family friendly activities, twilight markets, carols with a live nativity scene, and fireworks. It runs from 3:30pm to 8:00pm on Sunday 6 December at Peter Lightfoot Oval on Horizon Drive, and the page says no bookings are required.
The organiser’s Facebook event adds detail the council page does not have. It says the annual Centenary Carols is back for its 39th year, presented by The Salvation Army West Brisbane and Cr Sarah Hutton on behalf of Brisbane City Council. It calls the night a 4074 family tradition, with activities from 3:30pm followed by carols from 6:45pm, and gives the address as 141 Horizon Drive, Middle Park. So the practical plan is to arrive in the afternoon for the stalls and activities, and be on the oval by 6:45pm for the singing.
The council has not published parking, bus or road closure advice for this event. The page directs people to the event’s Facebook page for more information. If you are driving, expect to look for street parking around Horizon Drive and allow time, because we cannot tell you where the organisers want cars to go.

What happens at Carols on the Lawn in Seventeen Mile Rocks?
Carols on the Lawn is a Christian carols service at Rocks Riverside Park. The council page says a full orchestra and singers will lead carols such as Silent Night and Joy to the World, and that entry is free, including a battery-operated candle and a program. No booking is needed.
The evening starts with a barbecue dinner at 5pm, along with live music, market stalls and free face painting. The council lists the dinner prices as $3 for a sausage on bread and $2 for a drink. The carols service then starts at 6:30pm. The page’s details section lists the dinner at 6pm and the service at 6:30pm, which differs from the 5pm start in the main text, so treat 5pm as the time the evening opens and 6:30pm as the time the singing starts.
How do I get to Rocks Riverside Park?
The council’s park page gives more practical advice for this one than for the other two events. The main entrance is via Counihan Road, you can park free in the on-site car parks reached through the main entry, and street parking is available on Counihan Road and surrounding streets. You can also walk in from Counihan Road or the riverfront promenade, or ride along the wide riverfront path that links the park to Sinnamon Park and the Western Freeway Bikeway. For public transport the council points to Translink’s Journey Planner, and has not published a special bus plan for the night.
There is one detail to watch. The council’s park page lists the park’s opening hours as 6.30am to 7pm daily, while the event runs until 10pm. The council has not explained how the two fit together, so if you plan to arrive by car, check the event’s own information close to the date about gate times.

What else is in the park for children?
The council says the park covers about 26 hectares, with a picnic and event space at the entrance, a flat green lawn known as the Western Lawn, and a riverflat area. The facilities include a water play area, a jumping pillow, a liberty swing, 2 playgrounds, electric barbecues and a kiosk next to the jumping pillow that sells coffee and pre-packaged snacks. The kiosk’s listed hours are 5.30am to 7pm, and the council notes its hours vary with season and demand, so do not count on it for dinner on the night.
What is on at Carols by Candlelight in Ashgrove?
The Ashgrove carols are on Saturday 12 December from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Dorrington Park, 5 Mirrabooka Road. The council page title says the event is presented by Rotary Ashgrove The Gap and Brisbane Rivercity Rotoract. It calls it a free community event with entertainment, food stalls, Santa and fireworks, says it is proudly supported by Brisbane City Council, and says no bookings are required.
The address line adds a useful note: dog off-leash and car park access is via Frasers Road. In practice, that means drivers should aim for Frasers Road, not Mirrabooka Road, and that anyone bringing a dog should ask the organisers about the off-leash area on the night, because the council does not say what the arrangements are.

Which one should I pick?
| If you want | The council’s pages point to |
|---|---|
| Afternoon activities and fireworks | Centenary Carols (activities from 3:30pm, fireworks listed) |
| A longer evening with a sit-down service | Carols on the Lawn (service at 6:30pm, event listed to 10pm) |
| Santa and fireworks on a Saturday | Carols by Candlelight at Ashgrove on 12 December |
| Clear parking advice | Rocks Riverside Park (free on-site car parks) |
| A live nativity scene | Centenary Carols |
The two events on 6 December overlap, so you cannot comfortably do both. Centenary Carols finishes at 8pm with the singing starting at 6:45pm, and Carols on the Lawn starts its service at 6:30pm, so choose one for the main carol-singing.

How do I check for changes before the night?
Each council page sends visitors to the event’s Facebook page for further information, so that is the page to watch for line-ups and any changes. Translink’s Journey Planner is the place to check buses on the day, and Translink’s event transport page lists the events it has published special advice for. None of these three was listed there on 7 November. For help with a trip, Translink’s number is 13 12 30. The council’s customer line is 07 3403 8888.
