Sovereign Hill is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm outside school holidays, parking is free, and an adult general admission ticket starts from $68.00 as of November 2026. The night show AURA costs extra, from $45.00 for an adult, and it must be booked in advance. This guide is built from Sovereign Hill’s own pages, checked on Saturday 7 November 2026.

When is Sovereign Hill open?

The FAQ and visitor information pages give the same hours. Sovereign Hill is open to the public Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, outside school holidays. During the Victorian school holidays it is open every day from 10am to 5pm. The Gold Rush Centre and Rare Trades Centre are open for pre-booked workshops and tours only.

The site lists the public holidays it opens on in 2026. The remaining one this year is Boxing Day, Monday 28 December. Melbourne Cup Day was listed as open on both Monday 2 November and Tuesday 3 November. School programs can still be booked on Mondays through the schools booking team.

How much are Sovereign Hill tickets?

The tickets page shows these “from” prices for an adult. Prices are as of November 2026, and the site says to choose your date online for the full price list.

Ticket or pass Adult, from What the site says
General admission $68.00 Everyday visits throughout the year, except during Winter Wonderlights
VIP Rebellion Pass $102.50 A VIP experience
Locals Pass $77.50 Unlimited visits for 12 months, including Winter Wonderlights
Annual Pass $136.00 12 months of entry plus discounts, “all for less than the price of three visits”
Pioneer Pass Free Free entry for Ballarat locals aged 70 and over, all year round
AURA $45.00 Additional to the day ticket
Fashion Collection Tour $25.00 Additional to the day ticket
Chinese Cultural Collection Tour $25.00 Additional to the day ticket
Treasures from the Collection Tour $25.00 Additional to the day ticket

The FAQ recommends pre-booking for quick entry, but says you can also buy on the day from the customer service team. There is one catch. If a day shows as sold out online, no extra tickets will be available at the entrance, and the site asks you to pre-book tickets for everyone, including children and babies.

What is included in the ticket?

Admission includes the classic experiences: panning for gold, theatre performances, street shows, live demonstrations, exploring the shops and cottages, bowling, self-guided tours of the Red Hill Mine, the Gold Pour and special seasonal activities. The site says a ticket carries “20+ activities”.

Premium activities are paid for separately, on the day at the relevant location. These are costumed photography, guided mine tours, the Makers Series, candle-dipping and coach rides. They are limited and subject to availability, and limited pre-booking is available online. The FAQ suggests arriving at 10am, because sessions can book out.

The Gold Museum is closed. The FAQ says it has become the Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections and the Australian Centre for Rare Arts & Forgotten Trades.

Is parking free at Sovereign Hill?

Yes. The FAQ says parking on site is free, in the main visitor car park on Bradshaw Street. The visitor information page adds that the free parking includes an electric vehicle charging station. Disabled parking is limited, according to the FAQ. The address is Bradshaw Street, Ballarat, and the museum is on Wadawurrung Country.

What is AURA, and when does it start?

AURA is a 90-minute night show that turns Sovereign Hill into a moving theatre with hundreds of projections. The site says it follows the creation of gold and its impact, and the Wadawurrung creation story. It runs in several sections beginning in a theatre, with electric touring buses moving you between locations, and ends in an open-air theatre. Performances run five nights a week, and every night during the Victorian school holidays. During school terms, school groups attend AURA on weeknights as part of camp programs.

AURA ticket Price
Adult $45.00
Concession (Australian cards only) $36.00
Child, ages 5 to 15 (with an adult ticket); under 5 free $24.00
Family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children) $124.00
Family of 3 (1 adult, 2 children) $83.50
Additional child (family only) $24.00

Show times follow nightfall. The site lists these first and second shows. The second show depends on numbers and runs only as required.

Month First show Second show
October and November 8:45pm 9:45pm
December 9:15pm 10:15pm
January 9:15pm 10:15pm
February, March and April 8:45pm 9:45pm
April to October 7pm 8pm
Winter Wonderlights 7:30pm 8:30pm

Arrive 15 minutes early. Late admissions miss part of the first section, and nobody is admitted later than 10 minutes after the start time. The show runs in all weather, so the site recommends casual, warm clothing and good walking shoes, and says it will refund or reschedule if extreme weather forces a cancellation. Dinner before the show is not available until further notice.

Is AURA suitable for children, and what should I know about the sounds?

Sovereign Hill says parental discretion is required, because the show uses loud sound effects and dramatic pyrotechnics. Prams and strollers cannot be brought on, because of the set-up of the vehicles. The first theatre uses 3D technology with flickering and flashing effects that may be a visual challenge or a trigger for some seizures, and the sound there is loud. The Golden Point Theatre has gas-gun gunshot sounds, gas-made fire including a hotel burning down, and Chinese crackers. A Social Story is available on the AURA page, visitors are advised to bring their own ear defenders if they have them, and the site has a limited number to lend. Flash photography is strictly forbidden. The show is in English, and it is accessible for all mobilities, with ramp access to the theatres and a wheelchair lift on the vehicles.

The AURA page also warns that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that it contains video, voices and names of deceased persons, and that the family of Uncle Jack Charles has given permission to continue to use his name and images.

What are the rules on concessions, pets and cancellations?

Sovereign Hill accepts Australian concession cards only, and the card must be valid and shown at booking and at entry. The list covers Pension, Disability, Health Care and Sole Parent cards, Veterans’ Affairs cards, Australian Student cards, ISIC International Student cards, Seniors cards, Carers cards and Companion Cards. A Companion Card holder can bring one adult guest free.

Only trained, registered assistance animals are allowed on site. Other dogs and pets are not, because of the resident animals, which include donkeys, ducks and a cat named Fergus. The horses that pull the coaches are working animals, and the site asks visitors to give way to coaches and not to touch or feed the horses.

General admission, AURA and accommodation are non-refundable and all ticket sales are final. If the museum cannot open because of conditions that restrict operation, a full refund is processed. If you tell Sovereign Hill at least 48 hours before arrival, a change of date for general admission or AURA may be offered at its discretion, with no more than one change per booking. You can leave and re-enter on the same day if you keep your ticket for scanning.

Can I stay at Sovereign Hill?

Yes. The FAQ says the Sovereign Hill Hotel is open, with a private entry to the museum for hotel guests. Hotel bookings can be made online or on (03) 5337 1159.
