The fine amount for school zone speeding, and the term dates, which the sources used here do not give

In Western Australia, the 40 km/h school zone speed limit applies on school days from 7:30am to 9:00am and from 2:30pm to 4:00pm, according to Main Roads Western Australia. The WA Government says the same windows apply to its new school zone safety cameras, which enforce the limit during the public school term. Main Roads adds that the hours in regional areas may vary, so the sign at each zone is the one to follow.

This guide uses the Road Safety Commission’s school zones page (last updated 24 September 2026), the Main Roads children’s crossings program page and the WA Government media statement of 9 October 2026, all read on 7 November 2026.

What times does the 40 km/h school zone limit apply?

Item What the sources say
Morning 7:30am to 9:00am on school days
Afternoon 2:30pm to 4:00pm on school days
Speed limit 40 km/h
Camera hours During the public school term, 7:30am to 9am and 2:30pm to 4pm
Regional areas Hours may vary

The sources use the words “school days” and “public school term”. They do not list term dates.

What is the difference between a school zone and a children’s crossing?

Main Roads says school zone area signs include “School Zone” and “End School Zone” markers. Traffic warden controlled children’s crossings are not in a school zone and are marked with speed reinstatement signs without “End School Zone” indicators.

Both types of site carry a 40 km/h limit. Main Roads says its program installs a 40 km/h speed limit, either as a School Zone or a Children’s Crossing Zone, at children’s crossings on roads of 50 km/h or higher that sit outside school zones. The state announced a $10 million investment for safety improvements at school warden crossings in April 2024.

Road speed What Main Roads says will be installed
50 km/h or higher Static 40 km/h speed signs at the identified children’s crossings, with a target date of June 2025 (the page does not say whether it was met)
60 km/h or higher Static signs progressively replaced with Electronic Speed Limit Signs, with a target date of June 2028

Where are the school zone safety cameras?

The Road Safety Commission says 20 new school zone safety cameras will be rolled out over the next two years to detect drivers exceeding the limit in 40 km/h school zones. The cameras are fixed for long periods but can be moved to different school zones.

Camera Location Status in the 9 October 2026 statement
First camera Soldiers Road, Mundijong, next to Court Grammar School Installed in July
Next two cameras Pearson Street, Churchlands Primary School, covering both directions To be installed “over the coming weeks”
Next to receive a camera Maida Vale Primary School, Kalamunda Road Named as next
Next to receive a camera Hampton Senior High School, Beechboro Road North Named as next
Next to receive a camera Hammond Park Catholic Primary School and Secondary College, Irvine Parade Named as next
Next to receive a camera Kingsway Christian College, Hartman Drive Named as next

The Churchlands site was identified through consultation with the Road Safety Commission’s Children’s Crossing Unit and an independent analysis of speed data. The cameras are described as semi-fixed and relocatable, and can be moved to respond to higher-risk areas.

How many drivers were caught by the first camera?

The WA Government says the first camera, on Soldiers Road in Mundijong, issued 833 infringements in its first seven weeks of operation. Within that total:

  • 63 vehicles exceeded the speed limit by more than 30 km/h.
  • One driver was captured at 84 km/h, which is 44 km/h over the limit.
  • One vehicle was captured on eight separate occasions driving more than 10 km/h over the limit.

The statement says 100 per cent of safety camera fines are allocated to projects and programs that reduce injuries and deaths on WA roads, through the Road Safety Commission’s Road Trauma Trust Account. The sources used for this guide do not give a fine amount for school zone speeding, so this guide does not state one.

Where are the smiley face speed indicators?

The Road Safety Commission says smiley face speed indicator devices show a red “slow down” warning to a driver approaching a school zone over the speed limit, and a green smiley face when they are travelling safely. The devices also collect speed data. The page lists five current locations:

What should I do when I drive past a school?

  • Slow to 40 km/h when you reach a School Zone or Children’s Crossing Zone sign on a school day between 7:30am and 9:00am, or between 2:30pm and 4:00pm.
  • Look for the end of the zone: school zone signs have an “End School Zone” marker, while a warden controlled children’s crossing has a speed reinstatement sign.
  • In regional areas, read the sign, because the hours may vary.

What is still to be confirmed?

  • The fine amount for speeding in a school zone, which the three official pages do not give.
  • Dates for the cameras at Churchlands, Maida Vale, Hampton, Hammond Park and Kingsway; the statement says “over the coming weeks” for Churchlands only.
  • Where the remaining cameras of the 20 will go.
