Ipswich City Council says the Nicholas Street Precinct Carpark gives up to 3 hours of free parking on weekdays and free parking all day on weekends and public holidays, while on-street meters run from 8:00am to 5:00pm on weekdays only.

This guide uses three Ipswich City Council pages: the Parking Guide, the Parking Meters page and the parking Frequently Asked Questions page. Council’s pages do not list the standard rates or fines, so those are not in this article.

Where is the free parking in Ipswich Central?

The Nicholas Street Precinct Carpark has more than 1,000 undercover spaces. Council describes it as a short walk from Tulmur Place, the Nicholas Street Precinct, Top of Town and Ipswich Art Gallery. To get there, enter via Bremer Street. Lifts connect the car park directly to Tulmur Place, the centre of the Nicholas Street Precinct.

When What Council says
Weekdays Up to 3 hours free parking
Weekdays after 5.00pm Free parking
Weekdays before 8.30am Early bird entry
Weekends and public holidays Free parking all day
Outside those windows Standard rates apply

Council’s page does not state the early bird price or the standard rates. If you plan to stay longer than 3 hours on a weekday, read the sign at the entry or ask Council on (07) 3810 6666 before you leave the car.

How do the street meters work?

Council calls metered parking its other short-stay option, for stays of less than 4 hours. Meters operate Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Outside those hours and on public holidays, on-street parking is free, though Council says to check signage for any restrictions.

Council has upgraded the Ipswich CBD meters to Pay by Plate. You no longer display a ticket on your dashboard. You enter your vehicle registration number, pay for your parking session, and carry on with your day. Before you start, Council lists three steps: park your vehicle, check nearby parking signs for time limits and conditions, and find the nearest parking meter or Virtual Pay Station, or open the EasyPark app.

What ways can I pay for parking?

Method How it works
Coins At selected meters only. Accepted coins are 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2. The minimum coin payment is 80 cents and no change is given
Contactless card Credit and debit cards, tapped on the PayPass reader. Choose the duration with the plus and minus buttons, or select MAX for the maximum time in that area
EasyPark app Start and extend a session from your phone, manage more than one registration, and pay only for the time you use
Virtual Pay Station Hold your phone near the terminal; if NFC is on, a payment page opens. Enter your registration, the parking area code and the duration

At a meter, the steps for coins are: enter your registration number, select Paid Parking, select Cash, insert coins until the duration you want is shown, and choose a receipt (none, paper or email). The card steps are the same, except that you select Card and tap. For the EasyPark app, Council says to download it from the Apple App Store or Google Play, create an account with your registration and payment method, select the parking area code shown on nearby signs or meters, then choose a duration and pay.

A map of cash and EFTPOS meters, EFTPOS-only meters and Virtual Pay Station locations is a PDF called the Ipswich City Council Pay-by-Plate Map 2026, linked from the Parking Meters page.

What if a meter is not working?

Council says to use the next closest meter or the EasyPark app. Note the meter identification number on the front of the meter and contact EasyPark Customer Support on 1300 73 40 70 or through the contact page on the EasyPark website. The same number covers problems with the app or a Virtual Pay Station. For all other issues, call Council on (07) 3810 6666.

What do the Ipswich parking signs mean?

Council’s FAQ explains the main signs. A sign with a number and a P sets a time limit, and the zone requires payment if the word “METER” is displayed. Time limits and payment apply only within the hours and days shown on each sign.

Sign What it allows
1/4P Maximum 15 minutes
1/2P Maximum 30 minutes
1P Maximum 1 hour
2P Maximum 2 hours
3P Maximum 3 hours
4P Maximum 4 hours
9P All day parking permitted
No parking Stop for up to two minutes to drop off or pick up passengers or goods; stay within 3 m of the vehicle
Loading zone Up to two minutes for passengers, or up to 20 minutes for goods, unless signed otherwise
School loading zone Two minutes maximum during the times stated on a school day
Bus zone Do not stop unless driving a bus that seats over 12 adults; no parking 20 m before or after a bus stop sign
Taxi zone Licensed taxis only
Mail zone Do not stop; do not stop within 3 m of a public post box unless dropping off or picking up passengers or mail
Disability space Only vehicles displaying a current Australian Disability Parking Permit

A no stopping sign means you must not stop on that length of road, and a yellow edge line can mean the same thing on its own or with a sign. A clearway sign also bans stopping, except for a bus or taxi dropping off or picking up passengers. Council also lists works zones, where only vehicles engaged in construction work may stop.

Where do I park for more than four hours?

Council lists long-stay options of more than 4 hours, on and off the street. The council-operated car parks are:

  • Gordan Street (formerly Marsden Parade)
  • Olga Street
  • Riverheart Parklands
  • Nerima Gardens
  • Denmark Hill

Council also names two privately operated car parks, Health Plaza on Bell Street and Ipswich Hospital on Chelmsford Avenue, and says that fees and regulations may vary there because they are privately owned. Our guide to Ipswich Hospital parking covers the hospital car park rates.

Does Council publish parking maps?

Yes. Council’s maps highlight the free, short-term and long-term parking in the city centre. It publishes a Parking Map (Free), a Parking Map (Short-Term) and a Parking Map (Long-Term), plus an Ipswich City Council Safe Parking Guide. All four are PDFs linked from the Parking Guide page.
