The Darwin Christmas Pageant is on Saturday 14 November 2026, and the parade itself runs from 6pm to 6:45pm through the city centre. It is free to watch, there is nothing to book, and the City of Darwin says on-street parking is free from 2pm that day. This guide sets out the day’s timetable, the route, where to stand, where to park and what happens in the rain, from the City’s pageant page as checked on 26 October 2026.
What is the timetable on Saturday 14 November?
The City of Darwin’s pageant page lists four parts to the evening. All times are Darwin time (ACST, UTC+9:30, with no daylight saving).
| Time | What | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 4pm to 7pm | Christmas Makers Market | The Smith Street Mall |
| 5pm onwards | Food and refreshments | Civic Park |
| 6pm to 6:45pm | Darwin Christmas Pageant | City Centre |
| 7pm to 7:15pm | Lord Mayor’s Lighting of the Christmas Tree | The Smith Street Mall |
| 7:30pm to 9pm | Christmas Concert | Civic Park |
The City says this year’s parade starts at 6pm, which it describes as “less time in the sun and more time to spread Christmas cheer”. It says more than 13,000 people attended last year’s event. The Makers Market is brought by the Darwin City Retailers Association and, in the City’s words, shows local artists and businesses. The concert features local schools, groups and choirs.

Where does the pageant route go?
The City’s page describes the route this way. The pageant begins on The Esplanade at the corner of Knuckey Street, continues along Knuckey Street, turns onto Cavenagh Street (the City’s page spells it both “Cavanagh” and “Cavenagh”), goes up Bennett Street, then turns left onto Smith Street and finishes at Civic Park. The FAQ adds that participants will drive, march, walk and dance along it.
| Leg | Street |
|---|---|
| Start | The Esplanade, at the corner of Knuckey Street |
| 1 | Knuckey Street |
| 2 | Cavenagh Street |
| 3 | Bennett Street |
| 4 | Left onto Smith Street |
| Finish | Civic Park |
The City has not yet published a parade route map, so check its page again before the day. The City’s page does not list road closures or say which streets will close while the parade passes, so ask the City or follow its Facebook page for traffic changes.

Where is the best place to watch the parade?
The City names three streets on the route and says what each is good for:
| Street | What the City says |
|---|---|
| Bennett Street | The main stage is here, and it is the last street before the parade finishes at Civic Park. It is close to the Christmas tree lighting, which follows the parade |
| Knuckey Street | Good for smaller children, with plenty of space and shade, particularly at Raintree Park |
| Cavenagh Street | Good if you are bringing your own chairs and rugs. Entertainers will roam the street while you wait for the floats |
Street food vendors will be serving food and treats in Civic Park from 5pm.
Where can I park for the Darwin Christmas Pageant?
The City says on-street parking is free from 2pm and off-street parking is free on weekends. It lists these car parks:
- West Lane Carpark, with extended operating hours until 10:30pm on 14 November 2026
- State Square Carpark
- Fort Hill (Darwin Waterfront)
- Nichols Place Carpark, which the City says has limited parking
- Dragonfly Carpark, with extended operating hours until 10:30pm on 14 November 2026
You can also use on-street spaces outside the pageant route. The City’s page does not give street addresses for the car parks, so check each one on a map before you leave. If you park in a car park with a closing time, note that only West Lane and Dragonfly are listed with extended hours until 10:30pm, which covers the end of the concert at 9pm.
What do the car parks normally cost, and when are they free?
The City’s off-street parking fees page says parking is free after hours, on weekends and on public holidays in all off-street locations. Paid parking applies Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. Saturday 14 November is a weekend, so the standard fees below do not apply that day. They are shown for the other days of the week, as of October 2026, and the page lists these hours for the two multi-storey car parks:
| Car park | Weekday fee on the City’s page | Opening hours on the City’s page |
|---|---|---|
| Nichols Place | $5.50 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm) | Not listed |
| Dragonfly (multi-storey, max height 2.3 metres) | $7.20 early bird before 9am, then $1.60 per hour | Sunday to Thursday 6am to 8pm; Friday and Saturday 6am to 10pm |
| West Lane (multi-storey, max height 2.35 metres) | $10.30 early bird before 9am, then $2.10 per hour | 6am to 7pm, 7 days |
That is why the extended hours matter. On a normal Saturday, West Lane closes at 7pm and Dragonfly at 10pm, so the City has extended West Lane to 10:30pm and Dragonfly to 10:30pm on 14 November. The City says after-hours vehicle release can be arranged on (08) 8930 0900, and that fees apply. If you want the street instead, the City’s on-street fees page says paid parking in Zone A on Saturdays runs from 8am to 2pm, and that Zone B and Zone C are free outside weekday hours. That fits the City’s statement that on-street parking is free from 2pm on pageant day. Pay with the PayStay app or at a meter if you arrive earlier.

Can I take the bus into the city?
The City’s page does not mention buses or any public transport changes for the pageant. Check the Darwin Bus website for timetables and any event notices before you go.

What happens if it rains?
The City says the pageant will go on “rain, hail or shine”. It suggests packing an umbrella, since it is November, and joining the City of Darwin Facebook event for updates. For safety, if there is a storm or lightning in the area, the parade will be paused until it moves away.
Is it accessible?
The City says an Auslan interpreter will be at the main stage on Smith Street and Harry Chan Avenue throughout the evening, near accessible viewing areas, and during the Christmas Concert at Civic Park from 7:30pm. The City’s page spells the avenue “Henry Chan Ave.” in one place. It also says a Visual Story, a written guide that helps people prepare for a new place, has not been published yet. For accessibility questions, the City’s general number is (08) 8930 0300.
What else is on in Darwin this Christmas?
The City’s Christmas in Darwin 2026 page lists more, as of October 2026:
- Santa’s Village at The Galleria, where families can meet Santa and join in activities, through November and December.
- The Casuarina Christmas Pool Party on Saturday 28 November 2026, from 8:30am to 1pm at Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre, 17 Gsell Street, Casuarina, with free pool entry.

Who do I contact with questions?
The City’s FAQ gives sponsorship@darwin.nt.gov.au for questions about the event and darwin@darwin.nt.gov.au for anything the page does not answer. Its phone number is (08) 8930 0300. The City also posts pageant updates on its Facebook page. Community groups, schools, organisations and businesses that want to enter a float have until 30 October to register through the City.
